After spending some time trying to figure out how to provide a direct review link to a few of my social media sites today; I decided to sit down and blog about How to Solicit a Customer Review for Your Social Media Sites? According to Jeff Motter, CEO and chief marketing officer of East Bay Marketing Group. “The best way to get reviews is to ask for them, and the best time to ask is when you finish the job and are with them.” I agree with statement. If you performed an outstanding service, you want to ask for a review to share with others, while the experience is fresh in his or her mind.

After I complete my assignment and upload the pictures to the client. I usually wait a day or two to give him or her time to download and view the pictures, before sending an e-mail. I will usually ask the person, if they were pleased with their service and if so to please be sure to let other people know, by providing feedback to links provided. If there was some issue, I can address the issue immediately and hopefully win back a dissatisfied customer. If I don’t see any activity, I will usually send a reminder e-Mail, after a week or so; knowing how busy people get.

Finding a link for your Google Plus page was easy and Google even shows you how to condense from https://search.google.com/local/writereview?placeid=ChIJKwVbZmPz24ARx43qpkzySRA to this https://goo.gl/A6Exbh, which you can see is much shorter. The first step is to use the PlaceID Lookup Tool. Type your business address and locate your Place ID. Then paste that ID after this link: https://search.google.com/local/writereview?placeid=<place_id>. And voila! Even the Facebook Business review section was fairly easy. After some research, I discovered that the URL for my FB site was http://www.facebook.com/RKSShots/reviews. (** Note: You will have to enable this feature on your FB Business page. **) To do this go to your FB Business Page, Click on the Settings Tab, Click Edit Page on the left pane, Scroll down to Reviews, Click the Settings button, Switch Show Reviews to ON and Click the Save button. Copy the Share Reviews tab below to make life easier.

When I got to the Yelp portion of the show; there appeared to be quite a pages warning people not to ask for reviews on Yelp. Now, we are all familiar with Yelp. It is the site that offers reviews of all types of businesses in your area. Now according to Yelp, you are not supposed to solicit a review from your customers and here are their thoughts:

  • Don’t ask customers, mailing list subscribers, friends, family, or anyone else to review your business.
  • Don’t ask your staff to compete to collect reviews.
  • Don’t run surveys that ask for reviews from customers reporting positive experiences.
  • Don’t ever offer freebies, discounts, or payment in exchange for reviews — it will turn off savvy consumers, and may also be illegal. Yelp has a Consumer Alertsprogram to let people know about businesses that engage in this sort of activity.

This is kind of an oxymoron, because the more reviews you get the higher your business ranks. But according to Yelp, these reviews are supposed to happen organically, I am not sure how this happens, because usually people are usually too busy. Now of course, you can go to the front of the class and avoid Yelp putting other people’s links on your page, for a nominal fee. Of course, most small businesses cannot afford the $300 a month on Yelp or never see the return on investment. So, I let you figure out why they don’t want you to solicit reviews.

Basically, every small business owner and Social Media Expert knows that positive reviews help with growing his or her business. Think of it as word of mouth, but on the Internet.
